10 Things Drivers Need to Do in Case of a Car Accident

The moments immediately following an accident can be overwhelming. Oftentimes, people feel shocked, confused, disoriented or even guilty. These intense emotions can make it difficult to think clearly or know what to do. However, taking the right steps will go a long way in ensuring safety and protecting both drivers and their companies. This is why all drivers need to know how to handle an accident situation.

Below are a few things drivers should do after a car accident.

1. STAY AT THE SCENE

No matter how minor the accident is, stop your vehicle as soon as you can safely do so. Also, stay at the scene until you are cleared to leave. Even if the accident was not your fault, failing to stop or leaving the scene prematurely can result in serious consequences.

2. REMAIN CALM

With the emotions people experience after a crash, it is important to stay calm and collected during this period. Overreacting can make the situation a whole lot worse. Keeping calm will enable you to handle the situation better and get the help you need. If the other driver is aggressive or irrational, avoid arguing with them and try not to react in anger.

3. PRIORITIZE SAFETY

Car accidents can cause serious injuries and even death. While at the accident scene, ensure your personal safety by getting yourself and your vehicle out of danger. Turn off your engine, turn on hazard lights, place warning triangles and have someone direct traffic.

Also, check on the well-being of the other drivers and passengers. If there are injuries involved, the occupants should remain in the vehicle until help arrives.

4. CALL FOR EMERGENCY MEDICAL HELP

If anyone involved in the collision has suffered physical injuries, is bleeding or is feeling lightheaded, call for emergency medical assistance. Do not try to move the victims or perform emergency aid, especially if you do not have the necessary training.

Even if you feel fine, be sure to seek medical evaluation. Some injuries may not be immediately noticeable but could have long-term effects.

5. CALL THE POLICE

Whether it is a minor or severe accident, it is a good idea to report the incident to law enforcement immediately. The police will document what happened and help you sort things out. Remember to file an accident report and get a copy of the document from police.

6. DO NOT ADMIT FAULT

After a car accident, be extremely measured about anything you say to the other driver or the police. Even if you believe you bear any responsibility for causing the accident, do not admit fault. Also, do not apologize, assign blame, talk about your injuries or discuss the details of the accident.

7. NOTIFY YOUR EMPLOYER

Regardless of who is at fault, promptly inform your company fleet manager, a representative of the accident management company or the insurance company about the accident. That way, there will be a useful record of what happened in case you need some time off or decide to pursue compensation later on. This will also help you to receive the coverage you deserve.

8. DOCUMENT THE ACCIDENT

If it is safe and you are in a position to, collect important information at the accident scene. Use your cellphone camera to take pictures of the scene, the vehicles involved in the crash and the road conditions. In addition, note down the date, time and description of the incident as well as details of the parties involved. Lastly, take time to gather witness statements.

9. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR AN ACCIDENT

Accidents can happen when you least expect them. As such, it is important to be always prepared for the unexpected. Drivers should carry along with them important documents such as valid vehicle registration, insurance company ID card and an emergency health information card. Lastly, ensure you have a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle at all times.

10. HELPING ROAD ACCIDENT VICTIMS

As a driver, you also need to know what to do if you come across an accident and someone needs help. In case you find yourself in such a situation, park your vehicle off the road and ahead of the crash site.

Before approaching the victim, ensure the scene is safe for you. Next, establish whether the person has suffered any injuries and call for emergency help if needed.
